The sounds of cetaceans

Having heard this recording of a beluga whale mimicking human speech, it only made it all the more saddening to read this article about the Ukrainian navy training “killer dolphins” with pistons fixed to their heads.  Far from being the only convincing evidence that cetaceans are intelligent, it is still extraordinary to hear them attempting to communicate in language so different from their own.  Recent studies have discovered that they are incredibly socially advanced, and point towards a future where they are given “person status.”  Hopefully sooner rather than later.  Anyone reading who hasn’t already watched The Cove, here is a link.
